Elastic resistance bands for horses have moved from specialist rehabilitation tool to everyday training aid over the past decade. The research behind them has grown, the products have improved, and more riders are using them as part of structured training programmes for horses of all ages and disciplines.

What are elastic training bands for horses?
Elastic training bands for horses are resistance bands that attach to a saddle pad and make contact with the horse's body — typically around the girth area and hindquarters. When the horse moves, the bands provide a gentle, consistent resistance that acts as a proprioceptive cue: a sensory signal that prompts the horse to engage its core and hindquarter muscles more actively.
The key word is gentle. These are not restrictive devices that force the horse into a position. They offer a nudge — a reminder to the nervous system that the muscles are there and need to be working. The horse finds the engagement on its own; the bands simply make it easier to notice.

What does the research show?
The scientific evidence for elastic training bands for horses has developed steadily since the mid-2010s. Three studies in particular have defined what we can and cannot claim:
- A 2017 study at the Royal Veterinary College found that four weeks of band training significantly reduced unwanted rotational and lateral movement in the thoracic and lumbar spine — the back became dynamically more stable at the trot.
- A 2021 University of Tennessee study used surface electromyography to show that bands increased activation of the rectus abdominis — the muscle that supports the back from underneath.
- A 2023 University of Georgia study demonstrated that horses with mild hindlimb lameness showed improved movement symmetry after a band-based training programme, conducted alongside veterinary care.
These results are meaningful — but it is equally important to understand their limits. Sample sizes are small, control groups are limited, and we cannot yet say that band training prevents injury or resolves specific pathologies. How the bands work: proprioception and muscle activation
To understand why elastic training bands produce the effects they do, it helps to understand proprioception.
Proprioception is the body's ability to sense its own position and movement. Proprioceptive receptors in the muscles, tendons, and skin continuously send signals to the nervous system about where the limbs are, how loaded the muscles are, and how the body is oriented in space. When these signals are strong and accurate, the horse can engage the right muscles at the right time.
Elastic bands amplify these signals. The gentle pressure they create against the horse's skin and musculature sends a clearer message to the nervous system: activate here, engage now. The result is not a forced posture but a more active, self-organised engagement of the core — which is exactly what core training aims for.
Lungeing with elastic training bands
Lungeing is often the first context in which riders introduce training bands, and with good reason. Without a rider's weight, the horse moves more freely and you can observe the response to the bands directly — the head carriage, the swing through the back, the engagement of the hindquarters.
The 2017 Royal Veterinary College study specifically tested horses on the lunge, which gives us good evidence that the benefits documented there apply to lunge work in particular.
There are important technique points: start with a large circle (15 metres or more), keep band tension at the lower end of the range in early sessions, and work both reins equally. Combining training bands with pole work
Pole work and elastic training bands work through different mechanisms — but they activate many of the same muscles, and their effects compound.
Poles force the horse to lift the limbs higher than in normal stride, which recruits the abdominal and back muscles. Bands provide a continuous proprioceptive cue during the whole session. The sEMG research shows that combining ground poles with a training-band system produces stronger activation in the rectus abdominis than either tool used alone.
A practical approach: use bands in sessions that include pole work, rather than treating them as separate training modalities. Using elastic training bands in rehabilitation
The 2023 University of Georgia study is particularly significant because it is the first to test elastic band use specifically in horses with lameness. The results were encouraging: horses with mild hindlimb lameness showed improved symmetry scores after the programme, conducted alongside veterinary treatment.
This does not mean training bands are a treatment for lameness or back pain. Rehabilitation is a veterinary decision, and bands should only be introduced once a diagnosis is in place and your vet has cleared your horse for progressive loading.
When the timing is right, bands can support the return to work by helping the horse re-engage the core musculature that often becomes inhibited after injury. Elastic training bands and young horses
This is an area where caution is warranted. None of the published studies on elastic band systems included young horses specifically, and the skeletal development of horses under four or five years old introduces additional considerations that the current research does not address.
The broader literature on young horse development does suggest that controlled movement and low-load proprioceptive work can be appropriate — and that confinement and under-loading carry their own risks. But the decision to introduce training bands to a young horse should be made in conversation with a veterinarian who has assessed that specific animal.

Building a complete core-training programme
Elastic training bands are one tool in a broader approach to horse core training. The most durable results come from programmes that vary the training stimulus: ridden work with bands, lunge sessions, pole work, varied terrain, and rest days for musculoskeletal recovery.
A realistic progression for a sound horse:
- Weeks 1–2: short sessions (5–15 min), low band tension, focus on keeping the horse relaxed and moving freely
- Weeks 3–4: increase session length, introduce ground poles, begin working on both reins equally
- Week 5 onwards: vary the load — lunge days, ridden days with bands, pole work sessions, and terrain hacking on rest days
Expect at least four to six weeks before changes in musculature and movement quality become visible. Connective tissue and muscle adapt more slowly than fitness — but the adaptation is lasting.
